Paula DuVander is a Licensed Psychotherapist based in Santa Rosa
Group therapy focuses on interpersonal relationships and helps people to get along better. You will learn from and with other people, to understand your own thoughts and patterns of behavior and to perceive how group members react to one another. In group therapy you learn that you are not as different as you think or that you are not alone. In everyday life you interact with many people that may be experiencing similar challenges as you are. One of the most beneficial aspects of group therapy is that the group setting allows you to interact with a group of people who learn to work on shared problems. The more you participate in the group, the more you get out of it.
What to expect in group therapy:
There are usually 6 to 8 people in a group who committ to meet weekly for 1.5 hours. Each session one person volunteers to being sharing. Everyone participates through listening, asking questions and contributing support. You are never required to share if you feel uncomfortable. The group members have an agreement to keep all names and stories shared confidential.
The Therapists role
I have been trained in group dynamics and process and I will help you to feel safe while you practice new ways of expressing yourself. Your self confidence and self esteem will improve as you learn new tools for interacting with others.
What are the benefits of group therapy?
Group therapy can be more cost effective than individual therapy. The committed attendance demonstrates your willingness to show up for yourself and others. You will experience encouragement, emotional support and empathetic understanding from other group members. Group therapy can help to improve common symptoms of anxiety, depression and isolation.
